Proper planning, practice, and picking the right plants for the habitat saves money in the long run, too - reducing maintenance costs and excessive water use.

Sometimes, we’re starting from the ground up. Many of the spaces we dwell in have been deeply disturbed or neglected for decades, sometimes centuries. Invasive species like tree of heaven, nonnative bittersweet, nonnative barberry, mugwort, black swallowwort etc. not only make spaces hostile to native wildlife, but can degrade the value of your property in tangible terms. Of far greater importance, a degraded landscape is incapable of providing sufficiently for members of the native ecosystem. Only 4% of all mammals across the globe are wildlife - the rest are humans and livestock. It’s a similar situation for native plants, insects, birds, all phyla of life - and there are marked population declines nearly across the board.
